“To experience a billion year in one hour”
A reviewer once wrote to describe a performance by Marie Topp.

Her performances are characterized by their meditative and hypnotic effects on the viewer. By using slowness as a way to create hyper awareness, and by building landscape-like scenarios on stage through the movements of dancers, sound and light, Topp is creating performances that holds potential for intense emotional journeys.

From the finite to the infinite to the finite to the...Premiere 05.05 2026

Dates: Sydhavn Teater, Copenhagen, May 5th-9th 2026

Under the open sky, carried by sound and text, the audience meets a protagonist moving through a former land fill —Valbyparken. A place where the outer terrain shows no traces of its history.

The protagonist appears as a foreign figure in the landscape bearing traces of internalised lived events. Gradually her presence starts opening new spaces and time beyond the visible place itself.

From the finite to the infinite to the finite to the… is a choreographed walk, in which the two artists Margrét Sara Guðjónsdóttir and Marie Topp invite the audience into their shared fascination and long-standing artistic exploration of an alternative experience of time — a temporality that is felt rather than understood. The music is composed by British cellist and composer Lucy Railton and costume by Maria Ipsen.

	ELEGIER OVER JORDENPremiere 05.03 2026

Dates:

Glyptoteket, Copenhagen, March 5th-8th 2026

An elegy is a lament that mourns what has been lost. In ‘Earth Elegies’ the song calls for awakening, in a confrontation with our 2000-year-old cultural Christian view that everything is created from above. An attitude that has so greatly influenced our view of nature, disenchanted nature and contributed to inappropriate exploitation of the resources of the Earth.

In ‘Earth Elegies’, the Greek goddess Persephone returns to the Central Hall of the Glyptotekto give birth. Persephone is goddess of the underworld and daughter of Demeter, goddess of agriculture and harvest. Like the regeneration of crops, her birth is a long one: we follow her labor of birth over nine months together with a choir of young girls who work in the fields and struggle, while night frosts, drought and dust storms threaten the harvest, before the laments are finally released in a proclamation of spring and life.

In Sofie Isager Ahl's new poetry collection, Persephone is recalled as an image of what sprouts through the darkness of the Earth. Labor is not a moment, but a work. The choir of young voices moves like rolling fields through the hall, and the song holds back the world for a moment. In this musical staging at the Glyptotek, Sofie Isager Ahl's words are given body and sound through Katinka Fogh Vindelev's composition. The choreography, created by Marie Topp, allows the body to experience what the voice sings about: exhaustion, endurance and transformation. Slowness does not become stillness, but movement in deep time.

With 70 singers from the Sankt Annæ Girls' Choir, strings and soprano Katinka Fogh Vindelev herself, the work unfolds as a sensual ritual about birth, care and regeneration. The audience enters a choreographic staging where time is stretched, voices move through space, and the body becomes the carrier of the story.

The performance concert at the Glyptotek is based on Sofie Isager Ahl's poetry collection'Earth Elegies’, which will be published on February 27, 2026 by Forlaget Virkelig. The poems revolve around loss, regeneration and care for the living. " Kind Of Opera's ELEGIES OVER THE EARTH at the Glyptoteket is not just an exemplary collaboration between a small, but never stagnant opera company, and one of Denmark's most iconic museums – it is also a wonderful staging, where Sofie Isager Ahl's poems are given wings to fly with, images to lean on, and a memorable corpus of flesh, blood and terrifyingly beautiful tones. "
Casper Koeller, Sceneblog

" When the girls' choir takes up position right in front of me at one point and sings so dazzlingly pure that the room almost freezes over, this new father can no longer hold back his tears. What kind of toxic soil is this that our children have to grow up in? In an instant, the enchantment of parenthood can turn into a crushing melancholy of responsibility. That ambivalence is better sung than explained. "

Jakob Gustav Winckler, iscene

	TRUE RANDOMPremiere 24.05 2025

Dates:

Dansehallerne, Copenhagen, May 24th-28th 2025

Time is out of joint. It resides in the body. True Random attempts to grasp the feeling of balancing on the edge of the abyss. Losing orientation. Losing the organization of the world.

There is so much that matters in a life that is ruled by chance. It can be felt when the world is undergoing rapid transformation, and it serves as a reminder of how vulnerable we are, and how quickly everything can change. True Random is a performance where community and the poetic force of moving together are central, and where the meaningfulness of the randomness is explored.

True Random is the third piece in a series of performances exploring our personal, inner time in different phases of life. The experience of the passage of time is embodied through different formats, spaces, and temporalities. The previous works in the series are The Labyrinth (2022) and Maze (2023). By following the architecture of the labyrinth, the logic of the maze, moving towards the concept of “True Random”, these choreographies invite the audience to reflect on life and existence in relation to the most fundamental movement: the passing of time.

	THE LABYRINTHPremiere 20.04 2022

Dates:

Dansehallerne, Copenhagen, April 20th – 24th 2022

Inkonst, Malmö, May 5th – 6th 2022

Teater Momentum, Odense, May 31st – June 1st 2022
Aaben Dans, Roskilde, January 27th-27th 2024
Dansehallerne, March 27th-28th 2026
Teateret Gruppe 38, April 8th-9th 2026
The encounter takes place in a system with clearly marked entrances and exits. We all have directions to follow. The actual distances are impossible to grasp. We may watch the scenario from a distance but can only navigate in close proximity. We move through a landscape. We walk in an ever-accelerating nature. We hallucinate. Slowly, the surroundings wear on our imagination. We must dare to move, get lost and follow dead ends to see through the logic that is present.
The Labyrinth is a work that encapsulates the sense of time passing and accelerating.

It’s a work that draws on personal experiences of being equally close to the birth of children as to the death of loved ones. Where the reality of time is pushing you forward.

The audience meets three characters, all embodying different emotional states of time. They move in a blurred, yet alluring landscape of light, all immersed in a soundscape of fantastical voices calling the listener.

The Labyrinth is created by Marie Topp in close collaboration with a dedicated artistic team. The piece merges sound, light, costume, and movement into one immersive whole.“The Labyrinth” from 2022 is a masterpiece that grips the audience in the gut and gives form to the essence of life” Statens Kunstfonds Legatudvalget for Scenekunst 2024

“Sometimes you see a work that reminds you how incredible art can be — in that way where it feels like the world opens up, everything becomes alive again. Not because it’s entirely pleasant to experience, but because it strikes the deepest chords of what it means to exist as a human being. For me, The Labyrinth by Marie Topp is such a work.”— Bastard Blog, February 2024

“The Labyrinth is a quintessential example of Marie Topp’s choreographic approach, which, with understated strength and searing presence, manages to express the existence of a single human being — or of the entire world — within an hour.”— Iscene.dk, January 2024

We have chosen to forget what we think we know about the theatre, dance, collaboration, music, technology, community, storytelling, publicness, situation, event, intimacy, body, presence.

We left those preconceived notions behind in order to search for their renewal.

So, as it is often the case inside the maze, we keep moving backward in order to move forward in more than one sense:

We are retreating toward death so that we can discover how to live.

We are joining together so that we can again understand theatre
We are engaging a resting subject so that we can recover a resonating object.
We are reclaiming the sculptural volume of the body in order to make it dance.

We are discovering the origin of music in sound in order to listen deeply.

We are inviting you to be invited by you.

We are seeing you in order to be seen.

Because what was before will come back again, as new.

Or at least - that is our hope.

Maze is a work created in the intersection between choreography and sound art.
The installation consists of different resonators, some made of metal, some made of wood, special constructed string instruments, speakers and movement sensors.

Sitting in waves of sound, the audience will encounter the archetype of an oracle. Through her gaze we experience time as something recurring, circular, repetitive and non-linear.
The installation catches and responds to the movement of both audience and the performer.
Through this a contemplative, but dynamic sound space is created.

The performance has generally a duration of 3 hours, consisting of 3 repeated cycles. But this is adaptable to the situation in which the piece is being installed.

Oceanic is a solo performance made by Danish choreographer Marie Topp and Julia Giertz in collaboration with lighting designer Mårten K Axelsson and dramaturge Igor Dobričić. Oceanic is a reflection on listening and a feminist study of the hierarchies of sounds. Burl bowls are spread across the stage, following nature's own form with their unique and organic shapes. A woman is floating in a hallucinogenic sea, moving through what becomes a mythological landscape. She is evoking the past and present, voices and memories. Oceanic has an original, immersive sound set-up, including custom-made mechanical string instruments. Together, the protagonist, the sounding sculptures and the light create an embodied space for careful tuning and wild listening.

Oceanic premiered at Atalante, Gothenburg in March, 2020. The performance is part of a body of work dealing with how political and cultural structures are embedded in the senses. This series includes the works: Liaisons (performance, 2018), Shrill (sound work, 2018), Oceanic (performance, 2020) and Hail to The Good Listener (Performance commissioned by Danish Dance Theatre, 2021).

The performance is co-produced by Dansehallerne and turnenetværket Slingan; MDT, Dansstationen and Atalante. It is selected for ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform 2022 and CPH Stage international showcase.
